3G Internet refers to a type of Internet access provided by mobile phone companies that subscribers can use to access faster and fastest speeds than previous versions, such as 2.5G and 2G Internet. It is typically used from mobile devices such as cell phones though any 3G mobile capable device that can access the network. 3G stands for third generation and is the third generation of wireless network technology. It is a set of standards, or rules, that allow mobile devices to connect wirelessly to the Internet for surfing and browsing the web and making phone calls. The technical name for the 3G network is the International Mobil Telecommunications-2000, or MT-2000 for short.
To access 3G Internet, the user must have a 3G compatible device like a cell phone or a 3G laptop. She must also have a subscription to use the 3G network. Traditional WiFi allows users to connect to the Internet from a laptop or other device that supports wireless Internet. While the user has to pay for an Internet connection in her own home, many businesses and restaurants support local hotspots where customers can access the WiFi for free. 3G Network are not free and those with 3G compatible devices still need to pay before they can access the Internet using a 3G connection, regardless of where they are.
Both WiFi and 3G Internet are similar. They both provide users with wireless access to the Internet. The key difference lies in the fact that 3G networks also allow users to make phone calls and access other features from mobile devices which require some sort of Internet connection to complete. WiFi is mainly for surfing the Internet and typically a user cannot make a phone call using a WiFi connection. The connection to the 3G network, and thus the 3G Internet, is established through the device's SIM Card or Data card.
Since the 3G networks are more readily available than WiFi, those traveling often may opt for 3G plan. The Internet speeds are slower on a 3G network than a traditional Internet connection, but the user can access the 3G Internet almost anywhere she can get a cell phone signal. This gives it a much broader range of coverage than other networks.
